Outfit

Black, White & Mesh

Happy Friday all!

This is a look I photographed over two months ago when the weather was warm. I didn’t post this look sooner because quite frankly at the time it was not one of favourite looks to date. It’s one of those moment where the outfit looks so much better in your head than it does in photos. Over the weeks it has grown on me and I thought that I would share it with you guys to get a little style inspiration if where you are is warm right now. Keeping in theme with my recent obsession with black and white, I wanted to create a casual sporty look. Even though you cannot see the t-shirt as much, it’s from Zara and it was really a spur of the moment buy. I also love the words of wisdom written on the t-shirt “Not having the time to plan. Sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and start all over again.” The mesh hoodie cover up I purchased in Orlando, Florida at a cute little store in a strip mall. I purchased this one because i’ve been looking for a black mesh cover up for summer for a while now. Too bad I found it at the end of summer, but I definitely can’t wait to rock it next summer and on vacation. Both my shorts tights and flatforms are from Forever 21. The hat is from Urban Planet.

Happy Friday!

That time I purchased my first white boyfriend button-up was such an awesome experience. For years I’ve read about how every woman should own one, it’s one of the most essential items in our wardrobe etcetera etcetera. I was just like ‘yeah whatever!’ it can’t be that big of a deal right! Well boy was I wrong (covers eyes). It really is one of those items that can go with almost anything in your wardrobe. For me, I feel polished, neat and put together when I have it on. It’s a staple item to have for the office, but it also works so well with your everyday pieces like denim and leather. For this look I paired mines with leather pants, wide brim hat and a gray  waterfall collarless coat, all from Forever 21 (can you tell by now that I love this store?). My ankles booties are from Sirens Fashion and although they may not be the best of quality, they are pretty darn comfortable. I have pointed toe ankle booties from Spring and they just aren’t meant for commuting which is pretty disappointing seeing that was the reason I bought them. Until I find my perfect pair these will just have to do. My boyfriend button-up shirt is Vero Moda from Mendocino. I actually was not looking for it at the time. It was one of those shopping moments when you are walking by a store and you see those sale signs so you pop in to ‘take a look’ but end up leaving with something. It fits great and it turned out to be a great buy and I have no regrets!

Black and White Makes Everything Right!

Photography by Shantel Rousseau

Happy Friday!
If I had to choose a pairing to wear for the rest of my life, it definitely would be black and white. This also includes home decor, but that’s another blog story. Black and white just makes everything look so chic and so right. It’s easy, simple, sophisticated and still effective. It can look a bit serious at times, but I like to think of it as a more mature way of styling and decorating. Pretty much everytime I come across an item I always check to see if they have it in black or white or both. If they do, you bet I’m buying it in both colours. My must-have items to buy in both black and white are:

1. Tops: V-neck t-shirts; turtlenecks, silk blouses; crewneck long sleeve tops; tank tops, blazers, sweaters.

2. Bottoms: Skinny jeans, mini skirts; jeans shorts.

3. Shoes: Sneakers; pumps, sandal heels; sandal flats.

Style Tip-If you have no clue on how to define your own personal style, I suggest to start out choosing black and white pieces. Then slowly incorporate some colour if colour is your jam. I started out styling this look as all black, but instead of colour I used this black and white brick print cardigan from Forever 21 as my ‘pop of colour’. For me, wearing a black and white print or pattern can be used to elevate an all black look. I think of it as my statement piece like I would a necklace or watch. My turtleneck and jeans (DIY knee rips) are from Sirens Fashion. My ankle boots are from Topshop and I added the gold chain in front to resemble the Givenchy ankle boots. I topped off my look with my go-to wide brim hat from Forever 21.

Happy Friday!

Who says you can’t wear sequins during the day! Well, growing up we were all told to save those ‘special’ pieces for only ‘special occasions’. You know, your birthday, a wedding, Christmas party, New Years Eve etc. In the last couple of years I’ve had to ask myself why am I saving these special pieces for just a one-time wear. My motto now is ‘if you’ve got it, wear it!’ I mean why have items sitting there collecting dust when you purchased it to wear it. I sure was guilty of this because I’ve actually had this blazer for a while now, but only worn it a couple of times. It’s a great stand-alone piece that I can also just throw on with a t-shirt and jeans, no accessories needed. For cocktail hour I can also throw it over a fitted mini dress and go! If you’re not a heels gal and you have a lot of walking to do during your day, I suggest switching the heels in for some white sneakers instead. I’m also wearing my bodysuit of the moment from Missguided with leather pants from Forever 21. The bag I purchased from Value Village years ago, but it’s nice to see that this style is coming around again and in stores now. Get style inspired and shop the look below!

Let’s Layer

Happy Friday!

It’s finally starting to feel like Fall, so I have no choice but to dress the part. Layering is naturally not my jam because I am an island girl at heart. I’m that person who would just throw on my coat or jacket with just a top and pants on. I actually only started wearing scarves and winter head gear about four years ago. Plus I’m starting to appreciate pantyhose and what they can do for your legs. I may not be an expert at layering, but I have learnt some pretty simple tricks over the years that will not only keep you warm, but also looking stylish all season. Here are three simple layering rules to incorporate into your Fall dressing.

Play With Proportions

Chunky knits and skinny bottoms are a great combo for the cooler months. Because you don’t want to look bulky from head to toe, the skinny bottom is a great way to add length. Plus skinny bottoms looks best tucked inside boots which will give you a clean and polished look.

Monochrome

This is my favourite way to layer during the cooler months. You can be wearing up to five pieces of clothing in one look, so the last thing you want to think about is how to coordinate your colours. This is where monochrome comes to the rescue! Choose one colour and wear different shades of that one colour. Gray is a good colour to test this trick with because there are so many shades of gray.

Mix and Match

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different textures and materials. In this look you can see that I’m wearing a leather jacket underneath a simple gray coat. Not only does this keep me warm, but it also adds depth and a bit of edge to my look. I paired this with a lighter gray skinny jeans and finished the look with nude suede ankle boots.

Orange Crush

Photography by Shantel Rousseau

Happy Friday!

Orange may not be the new black in my wardrobe, but a bodysuit sure is! I mean, I have to give props to Kim K (and her stylist) for making this item popular again. If you were new to planet earth, you would think that she invented the darn thing with the way everyone is going crazy over it. Yeah I know, everyone is wearing it, but I’ve never been that person who complains that everyone is wearing the same thing or everyone looks the same etc. My thing is, if a trend works for you, wear the hell out of it and buy it in every colour and style.

This look is pretty simple with a H&M bodysuit as a pop of colour paired with white skinnies from the same brand (ripped the knees myself). I threw on a black leather jacket over my shoulder just to have a third piece to complete my look. My fashion goal is to become that woman with a very simple and minimalistic wardrobe, who buys everything in black, white and neutrals. Even though I’ve said it before that black is a happy colour, I just can’t give up colour all together, because sometimes you just need that one right pop of colour.

So tell me what is your fashion goal and share in the comments section. Plus get style inspired and shop this look below.

Thankful For Tights

So thankful for tights! It’s the one item I can wear around the house, to bed, running errands, to the gym, and even out for the night. I’ve paired them with sneakers, heels, boots and everything in between. Plus they make your legs look long and lean – no wonder men love seeing us in them.

This is a casual look I would wear to run errands or go shopping in because it’s super comfy and not fussy. The boots not so much because realistically they are way too high to run errands in, but I loved the way they looked against the gray. I would most likely trade in these for some flatforms or sneakers instead. This t-shirts I found by accident shopping in Orlando, Florida and wish I bought five more. It’s now my go to t-shirt because it has the right amount of looseness yet it’s tailored in the arm area so that it’s not too baggy.

I cannot think of another clothing item besides t-shirts that are the most unisex item. Why I say this? For one, it can be made so that both men and women can wear it. A prime example are oversized long t-shirts, they are super popular and seen everywhere now. It’s made and marketed for both sexes to wear it. If you disagree I would love to hear it from in the comment section. Hope you get style inspired and shop this look below.

2. Camila Alves in Geroges Hobieka

Camila Alves spotted at the 2015 Couture Council Awards Luncheon. This is such a sexy and sophisticated jumpsuit, with the cutouts in just the right places. I love the high neckline to help balance this look because of the lengthy hemline. Camila kept her accessories to a minimum and finished the look with a sleek bun. Shop the look for less below.

4. Ciara in Fausto Puglisi

Ciara spotted arriving at the ABC studios for her performance on The View. This is a pretty daring look as the star decided to go braless. What I love about this look is that the thigh high boots fell right under the pleated skilt style skirt, keeping the rest of her body covered up. When it comes to style, it’s all about balance and Ciara always does this well.

10 Must-Have Fall Essentials

With Fall just around the corner and with just a couple more weeks left of Summer, it’s time to get our wardrobe ready for the season. I personally don’t pack away my clothes every season because I like to see all my clothing all year round. It also allows you to have an open mind when it comes to dressing, you don’t restrict yourself because of the season. I just do some rearranging, putting Fall items closer in reach. My favourite part about Fall is the colour palette, you can mix and match almost all neutrals and it looks great! Sounds easy right! Okay not so much. A good rule of thumb is to choose two colours you want to wear and layer on different tones and textures of those two colours. Another good trick is to match the colour of your coat with the colour your shoes or bag. A third trick, similar to my first one above, but taken to the next level. Create a monochrome palette. A mono what! It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. It’s just simply taking one colour and wearing it in your entire look (black is the easiest to pull off). Choosing different tones and textures of that one colour. With that said, see the ten must have pieces to have in your wardrobe this Fall plus some style inspirations for good measures.

Summer is here and my sandals are out! This season a huge trend are slip ons – dress them up or dress them down, they just make your outfit look super easy. I personally love these hot items because I can skip the heels and easily slip them on for an all day pool party. It does a great job in toning down an overly sexy bikini to create the right balance between sexy and cool.

Also when you think of a pool or patio event white is the colour that often comes to mind. If you’re a complete brand obsess chick, definitely check out the Birkenstocks, if not, Zara’s affordable version are great too. Top is from Suzy Shier, Skinnies are H&M, Sandals are from Ardene. The handbag is one of my best buys from Value Village. See outfit details below.
