Midi Skirt Moment

Happy Friday!

Having a midi skirt moment and it feels so good! Much like the bodysuit trend (now a basic piece for me) the midi skirt is becoming a new basic piece i’m stocking up on. Yes I know everyone is wearing it after Kim K popularized it, but my style mantra if you try a trend and if it works for you, get it in every colour. Don’t let that mentality about not wanting to wear what everyone else is wearing discourage you. It’s all about having the confidence and not worry so much about what someone else is doing or wearing. My only pet peeve with this piece is that because the material is usually cotton, you will be pulling it down quite often. Queue double-sided tape to the rescue, to keep that hem down! I only started using double-sided tape a few days ago and I must say it is a fashion life saver.

From my previous post I mentioned that I’m obsessing over neutrals and I’ve pretty much got it down right on how to match them. Here I’m wearing a combination of nude, gray and black. I paired my midi skirt with a turtleneck bodysuit from Sirens Fashion. My ankle booties are from Spring and the gray waterfall collarless coat is from Forever 21. I purchased the coat this past Spring, but I don’t see it in stores anymore. Not to worry, I found  a similar style below from Missguided below. This a simple look I would wear to the office or even to an event. I would most definitely switch to some pumps for the office and some strappy heels for the night.

Hope this look gets you style inspired for the weekend. Also shop the look below.

Neutrals Are Always A Good Idea

Happy Friday!

My obsession with neutrals has quickly grown and it probably won’t stop anytime soon. This got me thinking about my own personal style a bit more. As much as I may follow certain rules (that I share with you guys) to help guide me with figuring out your own personal, I realize I‘m that person who cannot just sum up my personal style in a few words. My style is not strictly sporty street wear, classic glam, minimalist, rocker chic etc. I usually get dressed based on my mood, whether I just bought something new, the occasion etc. For me I wouldn’t be true to me if I stuck with just one way of dressing. That’s why you may see one month I’m into an all black theme, another month I’m into street wear, then another I’m doing the classic minimalist looks. I like to switch it up and be a chameleon when it comes to fashion and the older I get I try not to take it too serious restricting myself to one way of dressing. However, I do have certain key pieces I have in multiple colours and style that I know works for me and my body type. These are the pieces that help build my wardrobe and are the backbone for my personal style.

This week I’m matching neutrals, wearing camel, white, gray and nude. Remember when colour blocking was a thing? The colour blocking rule was matching colours sitting directly across from each other on the colour wheel (see below). Even though I think that all neutrals match well together, I thought I would create a neutral colour wheel below. This is just a cheat sheet to help you match your neutrals together, by pairing colours directly across from each other on the wheel. For example you can pair camel and khaki which are two colours sitting directly across from each other on my colour wheel below. I took my look a bit further by pairing four of the colours on the left side of the wheel. My tip: if you want to wear multiple neutrals, go for it because almost any neutral colour can be paired together.

My coat is from H&M and it was just one of those right place at the right time kind of moments because it was on sale for just forty bucks. I saw it and tried it on, but I then left the store without it. Within minutes I returned to make my purchase. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it and how I’m going to miss out on a good buy. My long-sleeved cotton top is form Sirens Fashion and my gray mini skirt is from Forever 21. These gladiators heels I’ve only worn twice before and this was two summers ago. Even though I don’t wear them a lot, they are a great go-to gladiator heels whenever I want to add some dramatic effect to an outfit. This nude style is currently not in stock, but they do have it in black as well over at Lola Shoetique.

Hope you get style inspired to change things up from time to time. Also let me know if this neutral colour wheel helps.

Happy Friday all!

This is a look I photographed over two months ago when the weather was warm. I didn’t post this look sooner because quite frankly at the time it was not one of favourite looks to date. It’s one of those moment where the outfit looks so much better in your head than it does in photos. Over the weeks it has grown on me and I thought that I would share it with you guys to get a little style inspiration if where you are is warm right now. Keeping in theme with my recent obsession with black and white, I wanted to create a casual sporty look. Even though you cannot see the t-shirt as much, it’s from Zara and it was really a spur of the moment buy. I also love the words of wisdom written on the t-shirt “Not having the time to plan. Sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and start all over again.” The mesh hoodie cover up I purchased in Orlando, Florida at a cute little store in a strip mall. I purchased this one because i’ve been looking for a black mesh cover up for summer for a while now. Too bad I found it at the end of summer, but I definitely can’t wait to rock it next summer and on vacation. Both my shorts tights and flatforms are from Forever 21. The hat is from Urban Planet.

Happy Friday!

That time I purchased my first white boyfriend button-up was such an awesome experience. For years I’ve read about how every woman should own one, it’s one of the most essential items in our wardrobe etcetera etcetera. I was just like ‘yeah whatever!’ it can’t be that big of a deal right! Well boy was I wrong (covers eyes). It really is one of those items that can go with almost anything in your wardrobe. For me, I feel polished, neat and put together when I have it on. It’s a staple item to have for the office, but it also works so well with your everyday pieces like denim and leather. For this look I paired mines with leather pants, wide brim hat and a gray  waterfall collarless coat, all from Forever 21 (can you tell by now that I love this store?). My ankles booties are from Sirens Fashion and although they may not be the best of quality, they are pretty darn comfortable. I have pointed toe ankle booties from Spring and they just aren’t meant for commuting which is pretty disappointing seeing that was the reason I bought them. Until I find my perfect pair these will just have to do. My boyfriend button-up shirt is Vero Moda from Mendocino. I actually was not looking for it at the time. It was one of those shopping moments when you are walking by a store and you see those sale signs so you pop in to ‘take a look’ but end up leaving with something. It fits great and it turned out to be a great buy and I have no regrets!

Black and White Makes Everything Right!

Photography by Shantel Rousseau

Happy Friday!
If I had to choose a pairing to wear for the rest of my life, it definitely would be black and white. This also includes home decor, but that’s another blog story. Black and white just makes everything look so chic and so right. It’s easy, simple, sophisticated and still effective. It can look a bit serious at times, but I like to think of it as a more mature way of styling and decorating. Pretty much everytime I come across an item I always check to see if they have it in black or white or both. If they do, you bet I’m buying it in both colours. My must-have items to buy in both black and white are:

1. Tops: V-neck t-shirts; turtlenecks, silk blouses; crewneck long sleeve tops; tank tops, blazers, sweaters.

2. Bottoms: Skinny jeans, mini skirts; jeans shorts.

3. Shoes: Sneakers; pumps, sandal heels; sandal flats.

Style Tip-If you have no clue on how to define your own personal style, I suggest to start out choosing black and white pieces. Then slowly incorporate some colour if colour is your jam. I started out styling this look as all black, but instead of colour I used this black and white brick print cardigan from Forever 21 as my ‘pop of colour’. For me, wearing a black and white print or pattern can be used to elevate an all black look. I think of it as my statement piece like I would a necklace or watch. My turtleneck and jeans (DIY knee rips) are from Sirens Fashion. My ankle boots are from Topshop and I added the gold chain in front to resemble the Givenchy ankle boots. I topped off my look with my go-to wide brim hat from Forever 21.

Happy Friday!

Who says you can’t wear sequins during the day! Well, growing up we were all told to save those ‘special’ pieces for only ‘special occasions’. You know, your birthday, a wedding, Christmas party, New Years Eve etc. In the last couple of years I’ve had to ask myself why am I saving these special pieces for just a one-time wear. My motto now is ‘if you’ve got it, wear it!’ I mean why have items sitting there collecting dust when you purchased it to wear it. I sure was guilty of this because I’ve actually had this blazer for a while now, but only worn it a couple of times. It’s a great stand-alone piece that I can also just throw on with a t-shirt and jeans, no accessories needed. For cocktail hour I can also throw it over a fitted mini dress and go! If you’re not a heels gal and you have a lot of walking to do during your day, I suggest switching the heels in for some white sneakers instead. I’m also wearing my bodysuit of the moment from Missguided with leather pants from Forever 21. The bag I purchased from Value Village years ago, but it’s nice to see that this style is coming around again and in stores now. Get style inspired and shop the look below!

Let’s Layer

Happy Friday!

It’s finally starting to feel like Fall, so I have no choice but to dress the part. Layering is naturally not my jam because I am an island girl at heart. I’m that person who would just throw on my coat or jacket with just a top and pants on. I actually only started wearing scarves and winter head gear about four years ago. Plus I’m starting to appreciate pantyhose and what they can do for your legs. I may not be an expert at layering, but I have learnt some pretty simple tricks over the years that will not only keep you warm, but also looking stylish all season. Here are three simple layering rules to incorporate into your Fall dressing.

Play With Proportions

Chunky knits and skinny bottoms are a great combo for the cooler months. Because you don’t want to look bulky from head to toe, the skinny bottom is a great way to add length. Plus skinny bottoms looks best tucked inside boots which will give you a clean and polished look.

Monochrome

This is my favourite way to layer during the cooler months. You can be wearing up to five pieces of clothing in one look, so the last thing you want to think about is how to coordinate your colours. This is where monochrome comes to the rescue! Choose one colour and wear different shades of that one colour. Gray is a good colour to test this trick with because there are so many shades of gray.

Mix and Match

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different textures and materials. In this look you can see that I’m wearing a leather jacket underneath a simple gray coat. Not only does this keep me warm, but it also adds depth and a bit of edge to my look. I paired this with a lighter gray skinny jeans and finished the look with nude suede ankle boots.

Orange Crush

Photography by Shantel Rousseau

Happy Friday!

Orange may not be the new black in my wardrobe, but a bodysuit sure is! I mean, I have to give props to Kim K (and her stylist) for making this item popular again. If you were new to planet earth, you would think that she invented the darn thing with the way everyone is going crazy over it. Yeah I know, everyone is wearing it, but I’ve never been that person who complains that everyone is wearing the same thing or everyone looks the same etc. My thing is, if a trend works for you, wear the hell out of it and buy it in every colour and style.

This look is pretty simple with a H&M bodysuit as a pop of colour paired with white skinnies from the same brand (ripped the knees myself). I threw on a black leather jacket over my shoulder just to have a third piece to complete my look. My fashion goal is to become that woman with a very simple and minimalistic wardrobe, who buys everything in black, white and neutrals. Even though I’ve said it before that black is a happy colour, I just can’t give up colour all together, because sometimes you just need that one right pop of colour.

So tell me what is your fashion goal and share in the comments section. Plus get style inspired and shop this look below.

Black Lips

Happy Friday!

Repeat after me, black is a happy colour! This is a simple go to look I love to wear – tank top and skinnies. The black lips were actually a last minute idea. I bought this lipstick a few years back for halloween and thought I haven’t worn it in a while so why not! In the past I was a little bit hesitant on wearing high waisted jeans because I always thought they were meant for a more curvier figure. Now, they’re one of my absolute favourites. I got past that whole looking in the mirror and second guessing wearing them because I have no hips. You know when you try something on and instead of loving it for how it looks on you, you tend to think of how it looks on the person you first saw it on and expect it to look the exact same on you. Yeah so unrealistic and unnecessary comparisons. I think all of us women go through that sometimes. But once you learn to get past all of that, you kind of feel untouchable. Curves or no curves, I think high waisted skinnies makes a girl feel sexy. Get style inspired and shop this look below.

Five N’ Dime – A Collective Pop Up Shop

dsc_0673final11

With summer surely on its way, what better way to kick start the warmer season than a little thrift shopping. Over the years thrift shopping has become quite popular and is often confused with vintage shopping. To clear the air a little, thrift shopping is not the same as vintage shopping. In fact thrifting is buying something for less than its original value. Vintage is a piece of clothing or an object bearing a time stamp of 20 years or that illustrates a particular era in history.

With that said, you can consider Five N’ Dime a shopping experiencing where you’re thrift shopping, but also buying vintage at the same time. Expect this event to bring out all the vintage lovers, followers and admirers. Not to mention, how affordable the prices are.

Founders Danielle Evans and Tinesha Richards specialize in new school vintage; modern trendy pieces with a mix of unique one of a kind vintage items. With a year and a half of pop-up shop successes under their belts, their aim is to transform the definition of thrift. They want to give new meaning to your general understanding of what it means to “thrift shop” by providing shoppers with the opportunity to browse through items selected carefully from some of their favorite places to shop such as New York and Toronto. More importantly, Five N’ Dime encourages and promotes affordability so all items are priced reasonably and nothing is over $25. Yes, you heard right, nothing is priced over $25.

“As students we understand that it is difficult to keep up with the latest trends when you have text books to buy, tuition to pay for, and all the other expenses that comes along with being a student. Because of this, everything sold at Five N’ Dime is $25 and under”, says the ladies.

In addition to offering trendy clothing and accessories at a discount, the ladies are also concerned with charitable matters. “We are also strong advocates for helping out our community; and therefore each year we find new ways to give back. This year we will be donating 20% of all earnings to the Urban Arts Toronto, Girls Group”.

Nothing like a shopping experience that also gives back. I’m all for it!
